WELCOME BREAK MOVES IN AT EUROTUNNEL
Welcome Break has become the first motorway service area (MSA) operator to move off-road, with an estimated £10m deal at the Eurotunnel passenger terminal in Folkestone, Kent.
Under the seven-year concession contract, which Welcome Break won from former Compass Group travel concession arm SSP, the company will serve four million passengers a year at three units - Coffee Primo, Burger King and Eat In, its own hot-foot brand.
Welcome Break chief executive Rod McKie said the move was part of a wider push into the travel concession market, as the company looked to generate new revenue streams.
"It's a natural progression," McKie told Caterer, "We are very experienced at coping with peaks and troughs of traffic and 20-minute dwell times and we are looking to expand our horizons into the rail and airport networks."
Food service consultant Chris Stern said the move made sense given the limited potential for growth in the MSA market.
