Tesla’s Supercharger station at Welcome Break South Mimms is one of the largest and busiest charging locations in the UK, capable of charging up to 12 cars at one time. The most popular charging times, between 4pm and 7pm, require electricity from the grid at peak usage times. A flexible solution was needed to ease the strain on local grids and source electricity for lower costs.

Integrating a 250 kW Powerpack at South Mimms is enabling vehicles to charge from the Powerpack instead of drawing power from the grid. Outside of peak hours, the Powerpack system charges from and discharges to the grid and actually earns revenue by controlling grid electricity supply on a second-by-second basis.

Using Powerpack systems drastically reduces Tesla’s electricity costs while relieving the pressure on the local electricity grid. The project at South Mimms provides a blueprint for the development of Supercharger stations throughout the world. In addition to this, by reducing National Grid’s reliance on fossil fuelled power stations as a means of balancing electricity supply and demand, the South Mimms Powerpack helps to reduce UK CO2 emissions by approximately 1,138 tonnes per year.
